MMPA Clarifies Recent 40% Tariffs on Brazilian Wood Moulding and Millwork Imports
In light of significant new trade restrictions impacting international supply chains, the Moulding & Millwork Producers Association (MMPA) has issued a formal clarification regarding the 40% tariff now applied to Brazilian imports, including wood moulding and millwork products. These tariffs—announced in a recent Executive Order by President Donald Trump—add to the previously imposed 10% reciprocal tariffs from April 2025, bringing the total U.S. tariff burden on certain Brazilian imports to 50%.
The rationale cited by the Trump Administration includes ongoing trade imbalances and alleged unfair subsidies within Brazil’s export sectors. However, the decision has generated uncertainty for manufacturers, suppliers, and consumers who rely on cross-continental trade to maintain supply chain stability.
The association released the following statement:
Statement from the Moulding and Millwork Producers Association on the 40% Tariffs on U.S. Wood Moulding and Millwork Product Imports from Brazil On July 30, 2025, President Trump issued an Executive Order imposing 40% tariffs on Brazil to address recent policies, practices, and actions by the Government of Brazil that the White House considers a threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States. This recent action is separate from, and in addition to, the existing 10% “reciprocal tariffs” imposed under a separate emergency declaration on April 2, 2025. The new tariffs came into effect on August 6, 2025, with an exemption for product that was loaded onto its final vessel by August 6, 2025 and enters the United States by October 5, 2025.
In addition to other products, these new tariffs apply to wood mouldings and millwork products, whether or not gesso-coated, primed, painted, otherwise coated, or raw. The Executive Order excludes from the 40% tariff any goods already subject to current or future tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. However, goods under pending Section 232 investigation—such as certain wood mouldings under the current lumber investigation—remain subject to the 40% Brazil tariff until a final determination is made. Unless and until Section 232 duties are imposed, all moulding and millwork products from Brazil remain subject to the 40% tariff.
The MMPA is actively monitoring the evolving trade environment and is committed to keeping its members informed as they manage risk, review supplier agreements, and respond to the potential operational and pricing impacts of this dramatic policy shift.
MMPA CEO Kellie Schroeder emphasized the importance of this clarification:
“When sweeping trade actions are introduced without sufficient public detail or notice, manufacturers are left scrambling. Clarifying the implications of the Brazil tariffs is about more than compliance—it’s about giving our members the tools to act decisively, protect their operations, and preserve relationships across borders. MMPA exists to cut through the noise and deliver facts that keep our members ahead of the curve.”
What MMPA Members Should Know:
- The 40% tariff is in addition to the 10% tariff enacted in April, bringing the total tariff to 50% on eligible Brazilian imports.
- The new tariff became effective August 6, 2025, except for product loaded by August 6 and entering by October 5, which is exempt.
- Tariffs apply to all moulding and millwork products, including raw and coated goods, unless and until Section 232 duties are imposed.
- MMPA recommends members review import contracts immediately, seek legal counsel if necessary, and contact the association for support.
MMPA continues to engage with both U.S. and Brazilian officials, industry advisors, and legal experts to provide timely updates and advocacy.
