Obituary: Lee McLane Greene

Obituary

Lee McLane Greene, Sr., 63, of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Lee McLane Greene
(10/04/1957 – 07/21/2021)

Lee is survived by his wife of 41 years, Paula Hobbs Greene; his daughter, Ann Hamill Greene, and husband Justin DeGarmo; his son, Lane Greene, and wife, Samantha Martin Greene; two adored grandsons, Tripp Greene, and Mack DeGarmo; his brother, Hobby Greene and wife Janie, all of Elizabethtown, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins. Lee is now reunited with his beloved daughter, Katie Mac, who preceded him in death, as well as his parents, A.M. (Mack) Greene and wife, Frances Smith Greene.

Lee managed Bladen Builders Supply, Inc. where he worked with his father and brother since 1979. He was delighted when his son, Lane, joined the business in 2019. Lee and his brother, Hobby, continued to operate other family ventures as Village Greene Properties, LLC. Lee graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity. He remained a loyal Tar Heel and maintained life-long friendships with many fraternity brothers. Lee’s passions were family and friends, books, music, gardening, traveling, and golf.

Lee was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, businessman, and friend. Lee believed in supporting his customers and his neighbors. Lee embraced his community and served in organizations too numerous to name throughout his life, often in leadership positions, including most recently Cape Fear Valley—Bladen County Hospital Foundation, Elizabethtown Airport Commission, and the Elizabethtown-White Lake Chamber of Commerce, where he received the 2020 Lifetime Membership Award. Lee was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served as Treasurer of Methodist Men, a former Trustee, and most recently, a member of the Staff Relations Pastor Parrish Committee.

Lee represented the best of humanity—service and generosity to family, friends, and neighbors—with enthusiasm and (sometimes wickedly sarcastic) good humor. Heartfelt thanks to the many friends who supported Lee during his illness and made him feel truly loved.

The family will receive friends from 4 PM to 6 PM on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at Trinity United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown at 3 PM on Sunday, July 25, 2021. In lieu of flowers, the family requests consideration of contributions to the Katie Greene Scholarship Fund at Trinity United Methodist Church, Duke Cancer Center, or Lower Cape Fear Life Care.
