On Friday morning, State Representative Raymond Hull, Providence City Councilor Miguel Sanchez, Providence City Councilwoman Jo-Ann Ryan, and the Providence Police Department Mounted Command Unit kicked off a special ceremony. Following the ceremony, community members enjoyed refreshments from the Providence Fire Department Canteen Truck and Baja’s Restaurants, and several attendees won giveaway items, including Mt. Pleasant Hardware-branded apparel.

Throughout the two-day event, shoppers enjoyed special savings opportunities, including those in the clearance tent sale outside the store.

“We wouldn’t be where we are today without the genuine support of our customers, which is why we’re so grateful for their continued patronage,” said Owner Marc Gillson. “For 100 years, we’ve worked hard to offer them the right selection of products and services, as well as outstanding customer service.”

Since its founding in 1923, Mt. Pleasant Hardware has proudly served a vibrant community of immigrants, as well as surrounding colleges and universities, hospitals, small businesses, and other essential institutions, becoming known as “the nuts and bolts of the community.” In addition to the products and services offered by traditional home improvement stores, Mt. Pleasant Hardware has also provided a robust window repair and replacement operation, and has served as the community’s leading UHaul dealer.

Gillson is a third-generation owner of the family business, and just like Mt. Pleasant Hardware, he’s a fixture of the Providence community. Gillson has served on the Smith Hill Community Development Corporation board, and he contributes to the mission of the Joslin Community Center and provides internship opportunities for Birch Vocational School students. Gillson is planning to transition ownership of the business to his son Geoff Gillson, marking the fourth generation of the Gillson family legacy.

Mt. Pleasant Hardware is backed by the strength of its status as a member-owner of Do it Best, a US-based hardware, lumber, and building materials co-op with thousands of independently owned locations in the United States and more than 50 other countries. The store is located at 249 Academy Avenue in Providence, RI, and its hours of operation are 8 am–4 pm Monday–Saturday. For more information, visit mtphardware.com.
