84 Lumber owner and CEO Maggie Hardy was honored by the Senator John Heinz History Center – the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh – as a 2025 History Maker during its 32nd annual award dinner. Hardy received the award in the business category.

“I’m truly grateful to receive this honor, which is the same one that my dad received in 2015. I’m beyond thankful for the recognition of the hard work and accomplishments of 84 Lumber,” said Hardy. “I hope the 84 Lumber story is an inspiration to all future generations of business makers.”

The Heinz History Center has honored individuals since 1992, highlighting “the contributions of Western Pennsylvanians whose hard work, innovation, enterprise, creativity, and courage improved the world and still serve to guide and inspire us today,” according to the center. According to the History Center, the museum has honored more than 140 “history makers” during the past 31 years, including Fred Rogers, Nadine Bognar, Thomas Starzl, Teresa Heinz, Jerome Bettis, George Romero, August Wilson, Franco Harris, Carol Semple Thompson, Alma Speed Fox, David McCullough, Mario Lemieux, and Michael Keaton. The annual fundraiser has raised $10.5 million since its inception in 1992 to support the center’s programs and exhibits.

“The History Center has honored the region’s most influential and inspiring individuals as History Makers for more than 30 years,” said Andy Masich, president and CEO of the History Center. “We are excited to recognize this year’s outstanding class of honorees, who have all made an extraordinary impact on the region, the nation, and the world.”

84 Lumber’s founder, Joe Hardy III, was also honored by the center under the same category. After founding the company in 1956 and growing the nation’s largest privately held supplier of building materials into a national enterprise, Hardy III turned over operations in 1992 to then-26-year-old Maggie Hardy, who has been at the helm since then. Under Maggie’s leadership, 84 Lumber surpassed $1 billion in sales for the first time in 1993, $2 billion in 2002, $4 billion in 2020, and a monumental $8.7 billion in 2022. 84 Lumber is the leading privately held building materials supplier in the U.S. and is also a certified women’s business enterprise. Hardy is also the CEO of Nemacolin Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania.

The Senator John Heinz History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and the largest history museum in Pennsylvania, presents American history with a Western Pennsylvania connection. The History Center was voted as the No. 1 history museum in America by readers of USA TODAY (2024, 2025) and “Pittsburgh’s Best Museum” by Pittsburgh Magazine (2022, 2023, 2024). The History Center and Sports Museum are located at 1212 Smallman Street in Pittsburgh’s Strip District. The History Center’s family of museums includes the Sports Museum, Fort Pitt Museum in historic Point State Park, and Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, a National Historic Landmark located in Avella, Pennsylvania, in Washington County.
