The Estwing Golden Hammer award recognizes outstanding individuals who have dedicated over 50 years of service to the independent home improvement industry. These honorees have made exceptional contributions and continue to serve as role models of commitment, hard work, and leadership.

The recognition event, held on August 4 at Brownsboro Hardware & Paint in Prospect, KY, honored Ray Moneypenny, Norb Walthers, and Ed Lewis for their decades of service, leadership, and influence within the home improvement industry.

Ray Moneypenny: A legacy of service and dedication

Ray Moneypenny was celebrated for his family legacy in the hardware business. Ray, the former owner of a neighborhood hardware store founded by his grandfather, has been a dedicated figure in the industry for more than 50 years. Ray’s leadership and tireless work ethic have earned him the respect of colleagues and competitors alike. Doug Carroll, owner of Brownsboro Hardware & Paint, presented the award to Ray, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to the hardware industry and his community.

Norb Walthers: A lifetime of industry excellence

Norb Walthers was recognized for his 70+ years of outstanding service in the hardware industry. From his early days at Belknap Hardware in Louisville, Kentucky, to his tenure at Stratton & Terstegge and Do it Best, Norb’s career is marked by his tireless dedication, industry leadership, and a passion for service. Even after retiring in 1997, Norb remained a key figure in the industry, continuing to work with Do it Best and representing ELSCO. Jim Lehrer, former owner of Brownsboro Hardware & Paint, presented the award to Norb, highlighting his exceptional impact and lasting legacy in the industry.

Ed Lewis: Entrepreneurial spirit and industry leadership

Ed Lewis, founder of ELSCO, was honored for his more than 50 years of service and leadership in the hardware and building supply industry. Ed founded ELSCO in 1974, and under his leadership, the vendor rep group has played a pivotal role in shaping the industry. His entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to excellence have impacted countless retailers and vendors. Dan Starr, CEO of Do it Best and True Value, presented the award to Ed, recognizing his contributions and dedication to the
industry.

In addition to this Golden Hammer celebration, Prospect City Councilman John Clark shared a special message from Mayor Douglass Farnsley, proclaiming August 4, 2025, as “Ray Moneypenny Day” in honor of Ray’s faithful service, lasting impact, and unwavering dedication.
